Shelby and Wallace-Rose Hill faced off on the gridiron at NC State for the 2A State Championship game. After a fairly even first half, the Shelby Golden Lions were able to secure a 55-34 victory over Wallace-Rose Hill, thanks in part to QB Daylin Lee, who threw five touchdown passes during the game.
Wallace-Rose Hill struck first in the game, but after putting up a touchdown thanks to a 56-yard run by Kanye Roberts, Shelby was able to answer just over a minute and a half later. Lee passed to Izay Bridges for a 22-yard score to tie the game, then was able to put another score on the board later in the quarter to take a 14-7 lead.
But Wallace-Rose Hill stormed back thanks again to Roberts and was quickly on top with a 21-14 score early in the second quarter. As was the theme of the first half, Shelby answered back with two touchdowns to take a 28-21 lead with 1:29 left in the quarter.
Even though there was just over a minute to go in the second quarter, the evenly-matched teams continued to trade scores after Roberts scored a touchdown on a 35-yard run. But instead of tying the game, Wallace-Rose Hill fell short due to a missed kick. And that sparked something inside of Shelby, as they were able to score again with just four seconds to go in the quarter and ended with a score of 34-27 at halftime.
In the second half, it was all Shelby as they scored for three straight touchdowns that put the Golden Lions in a comfortable 55-27 lead. While Wallace-Rose Hill scored again, they did not have enough to overcome a red-hot Shelby team.
