Little League Coach Spotlight: Steve Calhoun

Today, we will highlight Breakfast Optimist Head Coach Steve Calhoun. We thank Steve for taking the time to sit down with ENC Sports Review and answer these questions for us. We had fun learning more about him and we hope you will too.

How long have you been coaching and/or involved with youth sports? Include your time affiliated with Rocky Mount Little League?

My oldest child is 21 years old and I coached her in soccer when she was 4 so I have been coaching for 17 years at some level.

What do you enjoy most about coaching in youth sports?

Seeing children put things together as a team. When children learn and figure things out.

What is one of your fondest memories coaching youth sports – in RM Little League or other sport?

Every time someone comes up to me and says “Coach”. That means I had an impact on their life.

What message would you like to share with your team right now?

We will face trials in life like the Coronavirus (and it may delay baseball season) but God is in control and knows what is best for us.

If you could go back and change an outcome (or coaching decision) of a game in the past 5 years, that you have been coaching, which would it be and why?

If I could go back 5 years, I would not change anything because we all learn from every situation and it makes us better.

Give a preview of your team for the upcoming season? – could you list the team when you do it?

Our leaders will be Aaron Fleming, Matt Pridgen, Ayden Phillips, Frenchy Davis, JT Wingfield and Judah Calhoun. They will encourage and lead Britt Dawson, Evan Tripp, Thomas Pittman & Andrew (Rino) Rine who will lead the team next year. All of these players will teach and train the up and coming Rookies: Riley Evans and James Stalls.

What is the 1st thing you and your team will do once the Coronavirus is over?

The 1st thing i’m going to do is to go to Disney World (sure wish we could).

We thank Coach Steve Calhoun for sitting down and talking with ENC Sports Review. It is our hope that you learned more about the person you see on the field. Be on the lookout for more coaches spotlights as well as game highlights and interviews.
